Canterbury
Canterbury people are leading the way in reducing rubbish and being
kinder to the region's environment. Recycling initiatives and innovative
resource recovery schemes are in place throughout the region, and education
programmes are helping raise awareness of the need to reduce, reuse
and recycle waste.
Key factors in helping to drive waste reduction programmes include
the collaboration of councils through the Canterbury Waste sub-committee,
Canterbury Hazardous Waste Working Party, joint initiatives such as
Environment Canterbury's support for district waste exchanges, and community
based organisations providing local solutions.
Councils throughout the region have also adopted a Hazardous Waste
Management Strategy, which aims to eliminate or manage hazardous wastes
so that there are no significant actual or potential environmental effects.
