Make a difference at work

Workplace tips

There are lots of innovative things you can do to help reduce your rubbish – check out some of the tips below to get started.

  • Put a small paper recycling bin beside your desk and empty it into the recycling bins when it is full - that way you don't have to get up every time you want to recycle.
  • Take your lunch to work in a reusable container.
  • Keep a plastic bag in your drawer in case you need to do some shopping.
  • Environment Canterbury have implemented some simple initiatives to Reduce Their Rubbish. Visit their website to find out what they're doing to minimise their office waste.
  • If you don't currently recycle your glass and plastic bottles and tins at work, but you do recycle paper, find out if the company that picks up your paper also picks up other recycling. Chances are they do.
  • Reuse blank sides of paper for planning and "Things to do" lists.
  • Non-sensitive work paper can be donated to local schools for re-use.
  • Any A4 paper only printed on one side can be reused as fax or scrap paper or for non-essential printing.
  • Recyclable items at work can be saved up in a box and taken home to go out with the kerbside recycling.
  • An office worm farm is a great way to dispose of food scraps around the office.
  • Use your own mug instead of a disposable cup.
  • Paper waste can be reduced by using email instead of faxes/mail.
  • Keep a reusable container in your drawer so that if you have leftovers from lunch, you can take them home and add them to the compost.
  • Take the empty milk containers home and put them in your recycle bin! (You may have to nicely ask the cleaners/tea personnel to rinse them out and put them in a box).
  • Print all unimportant documents double sided. This will greatly reduce the amount of paper used.
